Aurora College's Continuing Education courses provide Northerners with the opportunity to develop new skills or improve existing ones. Subjects are professional in orientation, such as Management Studies and Safety Training and Certification, while others are general interest programs.

  This St. John Ambulance course includes Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (adult/infant/child) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED). It is for those who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies in the home or workplace. A variety of topics are covered, from basic cardiovascular and breathing emergencies, CPR Level C and prevention of disease transmission, to more severe sudden medical conditions and injuries to the head and spine.

Becoming a leader is not an easy transition. It requires a whole new set of skills, as well as an understanding and acceptance of new roles - from "doer" to "delegator". At the end of this course you will understand the skills required to lead effectively by:

  • Giving performance feedback;
  • Creating a motivational workplace;
  • Delegating work; and
  • Employing problem-solving techniques.

  Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to recognize and effectively manage emotions in ourselves and with others. Emotional intelligence increases our ability to make good decisions, build relationships, deal with stress, and cope with change.

Research has proven that our emotional intelligence (EQ) is more reliable in predicting success than our intelligence quotient (IQ). In this course, we explore the topic of EQ and how to develop our own EQ, thus increasing our success with our career and relationships both inside and outside of work.

  Meetings have become one of the business world's most universal rituals. Managers spend as much as 80% of their time in meetings and sadly meetings are responsible for billions in productivity losses every year. Bad meetings can not only ruin your day but they can be bad for your company’s bottom line.

If you feel you are being propelled to chair a meeting and have never done this before and/or your meetings lack purpose and direction then this course is for you.

This two day course will teach you to:

• Differentiate between the five main types of meetings;
• Identify and communicate the reason for every meeting;
• Effectively plan for each meeting using a simple checklist;
• Engage all meeting participants, regardless of the size of the meeting;
• Troubleshoot common difficult situations that may arise in a meeting;
• Create clear, accountable next steps; and
• Evaluate the success of each meeting

  Leading productive teams is an acquired skill. Learn how to focus the work team without stifling creativity. Assist your team to analyze issues from different perspectives and to build on their collective synergy. Participants will be taught the tools and techniques for generating ideas and determining solutions. Participants will be given the opportunity to lead and/or manage one or more practice sessions. Sharpen your facilitation skills by learning and practicing the following tools and techniques: brain-storming, force field analysis, positive/negative analysis, cause/effect diagrams, 5 why’s, prioritizing, and decision-making tools.

This is the first of seven electives in the Leadership Certificate Program.

This course provides practical information and skills to resolve conflict caused by differences in goals, employee performance, and work habits. In this course, participants will define the causes of conflict; understand conflict management concepts and styles; assess their current strengths and areas for improvement in resolving conflicts; use specific communication skills to clarify and understand issues, interests and concerns; apply the conflict resolution process to everyday work situations; and set goals for building competency in the use of conflict resolution skills and methods.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to state success factors for coaching, identify when to coach and which type of coaching is required, describe essential steps in the coaching process, conduct a coaching discussion to improve/sustain performance, assess the effectiveness of one’s coaching skills, and develop a personal plan for improvement.

Learn people skills that build self-confidence, leadership, add sophistication to your professional image, and strengthen client relationships. Put into action the following: dining etiquette, handshaking, small talk and networking skills, as well as meeting, phone, and techno-etiquette. Make a positive first impression and more. Research conducted by Harvard University and The Carnegie Foundation shows that technical skills and knowledge account for only 15 per cent of getting, keeping, and advancing in a job. This course is essential for all who aspire to move up the corporate ladder.
